There's a good reason to bring a gun outdoors For one, hunting with a gun is fun Two, mud blasting is a great way to pass the time when you're not fishing Three, a coyote can cross the your way to check the trail camera
Best New Guns
There are no set criteria that I know of for woods and trail guns Stryker-Fire, the polymer 9mm you use for concealed carry and home defense, works just as well outdoors. But some types of guns - rimfires and revolvers in particular - seem to be their best bet. Here's a look at some of the new handguns from this year's SHOT Show that I particularly like

As good as it gets for the Smith & Wesson 648 range, it's on the Smith and Wesson trapline
I will never agree with David Petzal But if I share his feelings about the .22 WMR cartridge, we would both be wrong Not that I don't believe the round is overrated, in fact I think it is underrated It is as accurate as the average .22 LR? No. But in terms of effective dispatch of medium-sized critters, they are not even close Spend time on a trapline with one of them, and you will see a strong difference between the two calibers. Magnum rimfire kills the mysterious border force
Knowing this, and also knowing that I'm a sucker for heavy, stainless steel double-action revolvers, makes it easy to understand why I've made several trips to the Smith & Wesson booth for the new 648 - K - frame . 8-shooter in .22 WMR with a 6-inch barrel and fully adjustable sights. It's a big gun (46 ounces) designed for a lifetime of use. But even if your rimfire handgun needs are more for field work than target work, I don't think you can go wrong with it. $752; smith-wesson.com
Double-action revolver aficionados eagerly awaited the new Python after Colt revolvers returned to the market a few years ago. Many consider the original Python to be the smoothest double action ever released, and used ones have always commanded a premium. Their value has dropped in the last ten years, thanks to Rick Grimes, the MP who became a zombie warrior in the hit show 'The Walking Dead'. Rick uses big bicycle guns to fight off the undead, ass-kicking Southerners - all the while crafting a nice Southern accent himself.
Best Handguns For New Shooters: 2022 Edition
I put a .38 cylinder through it, and I can say with certainty that it is the smoothest revolver I have ever shot. It makes a good gun for hunting or defense, but if I were to buy it, I think I would have to set it up somewhere where I could look at it and think how beautiful it is. It strikes me as a legacy of $1,500 (4 inches); colt.com
For a trail gun, a full-size pistol that sports adjustable sights, weighs only 2 pounds, and has 20 possibilities worth of flat-shooting, high-velocity ammunition draws the eye. Ruger's new 57 might remind you of the FN Five-SeveN, which has been around long enough (since the 90s) to become a modern classic. Both are chambered for the high performance, polymer autoloader 5.7x28mm round, which was developed for military use but is also a standout in the woods. From a gun barrel, the 5.7 has the same ballistics as a .22 WMR rifle (40-grain V-Max at 2,000 fps. Your choice. If you want to pack a gun for coyotes, it may not be a good choice.
I ran a magazine through the 57 at the range, where it cycled flawlessly and was easy to hit. Perhaps best of all, Ruger retails for more than half of its primary $800 competitors; ruger.com
For training or plunking, the Glock 44 is just as tough and reliable as its 9mm counterpart, the Glock 19.
Federal Judge Rolls Back New York's New Gun Law
The newest model in Glock's Gen5 series is a compact .22 LR frame called the G44. As a training tool, the pistol is a close match (albeit lighter) to the Glock 19, one of the most popular 9mm handguns in the world. But it would also be good as a dedicated field gun for bullfrog trophy hunters, possum trappers and plunkers.
Aside from the caliber, steel/polymer hybrid slide, and simple blow-back action, this pistol is just like any other Glock. It features adjustable rear sights and a Glock Marksman barrel, an interchangeable backstrap for a perfect hand fit, and a Safe Action trigger system. I shot at the range, and it was easy to hit with something else $389; Glockstore.com
The Ruger Light Rack LCP II in .22 LR is easier to shoot than the .380 LCP and a great way to train at the range. Roger
Some say the smaller .380 made defensive .22 pocket pistols like the Ruger LCP obsolete. Ballistically speaking, this is true because when it comes to hitting the problem, a .22 is not a .380.

But sometimes reality gets in the way of ballistic charts And the reality is that those little .380s are so awkward to shoot that many people buy them and then never practice with them. And what was old is new again Ruger's Light Rack LCP II is now chambered in .22 LR, with a magazine capacity of 10 rounds. The light recoil spring makes the slide easy to manipulate, and the Safe Action fire control system provides a nice trigger pull. The gun has a manual safety, so you can carry it in your pocket with peace of mind (Many older .22 Pocket Autos had sketchy reliability, and I wouldn't expect it to be the product of a rimfire shooter more than a handgun) - but I ran a few magazines in some ranges without it. $349; ruger.com
I don't think anyone makes a finer gun than Kimber, but the new Rapide Black Ice is a standout for them. Competition-ready 1911 slide-around barrel for fast lock times, diamond-like coating for stability (that's what it's called, folks), TruGlo TFX Pro Day/Night sights and two-tone silver and gray finishes . Finish on the slide and frame, matched with special black G10 grips It also features a flash-fitting extended mag well, a game-grade trigger and a Commander-style hammer. I'd almost say it's great for hunting, but if you can find one in 10mm (it's also available in 9mm and .45 ACP), that's exactly what you should do with it. $1,510 (10mm); kimberamerica.com
Kimber's distinctive K6S .357 Magnum is a standout for anyone shopping for a carry revolver. It boasts the smallest round cylinder on the market The gun was first offered as a double-action-only Snubby, but that iteration was followed by several others, including a 3-inch gun with an open hammer. Maybe some other revolver nerds were like me and hoped for a version with a longer barrel and better adjustable sights, because despite its compact frame, the K6S has enough bulk to be a nice hunting pistol (say what you will. 357 Magnum) .; I've used it on several whitetails, and it works well).
This year, a 4-inch K6S target model with adjustable sights is available. I'm partial to revolvers for their traditional style, and the K6S looks thoroughly modern - but it's classy. With a clear single action trigger of 3.25-4.25 pounds (allegedly), I think it would be a shooter as well. $989; kimberamerica.com
