Air Force Uniform Patches - The U.S. Air Force badge is a specific uniform badge approved by the U.S. Air Force to indicate aviation authority, special skills, and field qualifications as an identification device for personnel performing specific tasks.
Most pilots are assigned to three grades, or skill levels. Aviation designations for Pilots, Combat Systems Officers, Observers and Air Combat Managers are awarded at Basic, Advanced, and Command levels; while Nurses and Flight Surgeons are assigned Junior, Advanced, and Advanced levels. All other aviation badges are awarded at Basic, Advanced and Master levels. Career badges are usually awarded to officers in junior, senior and senior ranks. Those above wear the basic badge after completing technical school, the advanced badge after earning skill level 7, and the master badge for sergeant majors or above who have worked in the specialty field for 5+ years after skill level 7. The star and wreath system worn above the Air Force insignia determines the rank or skill level a service member currently holds.
Air Force Uniform Patches
The chaplain, aviation, space, cyberspace and missile badges, and Air Force commander badges are required on Air Force uniforms. With recent changes to Air Force uniform regulations, restrictions on wearing other service skill insignia earned by pilots have been removed. The badges below are listed in order unless otherwise noted. The priority of badges in the same category depends on the pilot's current mission.
Cloth Usaf Occupational Badges
The Air Force is the strictest service in which other branches of the U.S. Armed Forces can wear the Air Force insignia on their uniforms. Most insignia issued exclusively by the Air Force can only be displayed on Air Force uniforms. The exception to this rule is the Space Operations badge.
The Air Force previously approved the continuation of some aviation insignia originally issued by the U.S. military during World War II. Such badges are no longer authorized and are now classified as obsolete badges.
Effective January 17, 2014, Airms are entitled to wear whatever qualification/proficiency badge they have earned on their Air Force uniform. The qualification badges listed below are generic badges awarded exclusively by the Air Force and other services.
The Air Force Professional Badge is the military insignia of the United States Air Force awarded to members of the Air Force community who perform "non-flying" duties. The purpose of the Air Force Professional Badge is to experience and recognize training, education and qualifications gained in a specific career field and to provide recognition in the external badge.

The first Air Force career insignia began appearing on Air Force uniforms in the late 1950s. Prior to this, the only approved Air Force badges were pilot badges and other aviation authority badges, such as navigator badges and flight surgeon badges.
The following operational insignia is worn on some Air Force berets as a beret insignia rather than on the left breast of the Air Force uniform. The badge on the chest and the subsequent beret badge both signify the same thing, Air Force specialization.
