Ammo To Go

Longtime Hyde Avenue restaurant Amo has turned the corner (literally), moving from their rger sit-down spot in pns to enter a takeout operation on Melrose. And now that time has arrived, owner Amy Sweeney will be slowly opening her breakfast and lunch spot this morning.

Calling it a 'return to Ammo's roots', Sweeney says the new Ammo to Go will keep a simple menu of longtime restaurant favorites while moving into the world of quick service, delivery and takeout. Chef Mike Garber oversees a menu of sandwiches, pastries, bowls and burgers, while other options such as coffee from Valerie Confections and take-out snacks are also available.

The Melrose location serves breakfast and lunch daily, and is open from 8am to 4pm, meaning you can drop in now. Note that there is no more indoor seating, an order counter, and a menu full of AMMO favorites from the previous restaurant, now with a more extensive salt cure. We can make it very short. We can do very little for most people in the country. Are hollow point bullets illegal? In one word. no. They are not illegal to buy or sell anywhere in the United States.

Well, we've noticed a lot of people online asking if hollow point bullets are legal. That's because an article in the Boston Tribune newspaper reported that 23 states have banned point blanks. We don't know anyone at the Boston Tribune, but the general consensus is that they are as reliable a news source as the Weekly World News. (That tabloid's latest headline, "Gluten Killed the Dinosaurs," is top-notch journalism.)

Are hollow point bullets legal for civilian use? Yes, everywhere in the US - except one. The state of New Jersey prohibits citizens from carrying hollow point ammunition unless they are at home or hunting. If you're not in a garden state, you can legally load empty points into your container.

Why are empty points controversial? Partly because some people think that a bullet designed to cause more damage must be inhumane. But when you look at the bigger picture, protecting citizens' right to score points will benefit society in the long run.

Let's take a quick look at how hollow point ammunition works, then discuss why police officers use them but the Marines don't.

Ammo To Go

The two most popular types of ammunition are full metal jacket (FMJ) and hollow point. The end of the FMJ may be flat, straight, or rounded outward. When hitting a soft target, the FMJ does not expand to create a wound channel larger than its original diameter.

A hollow point bullet has a hollow point instead of a tip. The pressure created when a hollow point hits a soft target forces the bullet open, increasing its diameter significantly in the process. This is the principle of opening an umbrella if the wind catches the handle first.

A hollow point bullet is fired into ballistic gelatin to demonstrate how it interacts with a soft target.

1. The bullet creates a wide wound channel. This increases blood flow and increases the chance of hitting an important organ.

2. It distributes the energy of the bullet efficiently. As the hollow point expands, it dissipates its energy outward and less in front of it. This deals more damage and gives the target a better chance of taking their damage instantly and being defeated.

3. The shot is often over-injected. A blank point indicates that it has transferred all of its energy when it fails to pass the target. This helps prevent harm to innocent people.

The goal of any self-defense situation is to get out unscathed. Many factors are important for that goal, but the most important is to reduce the time you are exposed to danger. A blank space can do more damage, but its tendency to kill is not a real value for self-defense. Being able to weaken the target quickly.

A non-expanding bullet can transfer relatively little energy to the target. On average, more rounds are needed to weaken the threat with FMJ ammo. Ironically, many shots with FMJ kill one shot with an inconsistent point blank. As a result, blank spaces greatly reduce the chance of death in a self-defense shooting.

When shooting in self-defense, you want your target to stop attacking you quickly. When your assailant senses the high energy of the piercing point and is exposed to the wide wound channel, chances are it will go down quickly - he'll immediately realize he's fired and then regret it. And if you're determined to shoot your attacker, aren't you determined to kill them? That's why drawing your weapon is the last step in a difficult situation.

Are Hollow Point Bullets Illegal?

Anything related to weapons will always be controversial. Anti-gun supporters already oppose the existence of guns in general. Knowing that some bullets are inherently more deadly than others, it's worth resisting them.

The Hague Convention of 1899 is often cited against the use of civilian and police blanks. The international treaty prohibits signatory nations from using hollow points and ammunition of similar effect during international warfare. The United States has not ratified the relevant Hague Convention, although we largely abide by it.

The driving force behind the Hague Convention was to reduce unnecessary suffering in times of war. A combatant who is effectively hit by an FMJ is as helpless as a dead person hit point blank. If a soldier is in the hospital, he is not contributing to the fighting power of the army.

You are not at war and are not concerned with avoiding unnecessary suffering. Every day you want to go home unscathed, and choosing the most effective bullets for your weapon is the best way.

Unfortunately, the public misconception about point blanks can punish you if you rely on them. If your act of self-defense ends up in court, the prosecutor will try to paint you as the bad guy. That's why it's good to have a low-profile gun: You don't want a 1911 gold-plated plastic bag prosecutor carrying a custom skullcap at your trial. In this case, a prosecutor may try to portray you as unfortunate because you used a shot that was "designed to kill". You're trying to win an amazing jury.

But empty points can mean the difference between life and death, so it's best to implement them as part of your self-defense strategy. Make sure you know exactly when it is appropriate to use deadly force.
